What is Sophia Learning and do schools accept it?

Sophia Learning is an online provider of self-paced, college-level courses that are built to transfer for credit.

How Sophia works

Sophia courses are fully online and self-paced. There are no class times. You work through the material and pass the assessments. You can take up to two courses at a time. Most courses cover general education subjects like English, math, science, and humanities.

Why schools accept it

Sophia's courses have been reviewed by the American Council on Education, called ACE. ACE recommends how much college credit each course is worth. Schools use those recommendations when they decide what to accept.

Sophia partners directly with more than 100 schools. Its courses have also been reviewed for credit at thousands of other schools.

What ACE does not mean

An ACE recommendation is not a promise. Each school still has its own rules and makes its own decision. A course one school accepts may not count at another.

Check before you start

Before you take a Sophia course, find out if your target school accepts it and what it counts as. Sophia's website has a tool to look up partner schools. The final answer always comes from your school.

What about Study.com?

Study.com is another online course provider. Its courses can also transfer when your school accepts them. The same rule applies: check your school first.

School rules change. Always confirm the current policy with your school before you enroll or take a course.
