What is a competency-based degree?

A competency-based degree lets you move through courses as fast as you can prove you know the material.

How it works

In a regular college class, everyone moves on the same schedule. The class lasts the whole term, even if you already know the subject.

A competency-based school works differently. You finish a course when you pass its assessments. Those can be tests, papers, or projects. If you already know a subject from your job, you can move through it fast. If a subject is new, you take more time.

How tuition usually works

Most of these schools charge one flat rate for a set block of time, called a term or a session. The block might be 7 weeks, 8 weeks, 12 weeks, 3 months, or 6 months, depending on the school.

You pay the same amount no matter how many courses you finish in that block. So the more you finish, the less each course costs you.

What it is not

Self-paced does not mean easy. You still read, study, write papers, and take tests. Some schools also set limits, like a time window for each course or a minimum amount of progress each term.

Who it fits

This setup works best for people who can keep themselves on track without a teacher setting weekly due dates. It is a strong fit for working adults, parents, and anyone with past credits or years of job experience.

School rules change. Always confirm the current policy with your school before you enroll or take a course.
